FISHING

Now that you have a place to stay, you might want to try some fishing. When you book a cabin you automaticly get a packet with a few suggestions to give you an edge on Maine’s great fishing. Suggested fly patterns, lures and some techniques are included.

GUIDES are available on a per day basis. If you are new to the area it might give you a tremendous head start on the local fishing methods to hire a guide for at least part of your stay. Most of the cabins have more than one pond to fish and your friendly guide can show you around.

FLY CASTING LESSONS are another great reason to hire a guide. It is no secret that a good fly fisher can out fish most anyone using other methods. In just one day your guide can have you looking like LL himself with that priceless piece of equipment.

SPEAKING OF EQUIPMENT, we have Orvis fly fishing outfits for rent for just $20.00 per day. They include all you need: rod, reel, two spools, flies, and leader material. These are top of the line outfits to get you off on the right foot.

All the cabins have something a little different to offer the fisherperson.

  • Portage Camp is on the edge of the North Maine Woods with dozens of drive-in, walk-in , or fly-in ponds "at your doorstep." As well there are some dandy float trips on the Fish River that originate out of Portage. You can expect LL Salmon, Brook Trout, Togue, and Bluback Trout within range when you use Portage as your base camp.

  • Henderson Camp is a fly-in only cabin; one of the few left in the state. It boasts great fishing for native brook trout. As well, there are three other walk-in ponds accessed by trail from Henderson. It has some good evening hatches. It is one of our favorite destinations.

  • Hudson Camp has mostly LL Salmon with an occasional Brook Trout. Upper Hudson may be accessed from there by a well marked trail and has some nice Brook Trout lurking in its crystal clear water. Both ponds have some good hatches especially around Green Drake time.

  • Clear Lake Camp is one of the few remote lakes open to ice fishing. If you are a hardy type Clear offers some good opportunity for the ice fisher. During the warmer months Clear offers trolling for Togue and Brook Trout. For the fly fisher , the famous Little Pleasant Pond is right up over the hill.

  • Big Reed Camp is a unique jewel of the north. It is a protected pond with a good population of both Blue Back and Brook Trout. (note: This cabin is available to Bradford Camp guests only. Inquire for details.)
